How to Save Fuel when Driving
62Drive on light traffic hours
It is more fuel efficient to drive during hours wherein the traffic is not heavy. You need to break and stop less thus not wasting the momentum of your vehicle thus extending the mileage of fuel consumed.
In addition to the fuel economy, you also experience less headache and stress. However, if you cannot avoid driving during heavy traffic, make sure that you put your engine on "neutral" while on full stop. This can be easily done on automatic vehicles. I have also noted that even manual vehicle drivers put their gear shift on "neutral" while on full stop. This has the effect of disengaging your engine thus saving fuel because your engine does not consume fuel pushing your vehicle forward.
When not in neutral on pull stop, your engine pushes you forward while your breaks hold it on a stop, thus utilizing fuel puts a stress on your breaks continually. But if the traffic is slow moving but does not comes to a long stop, you may not put your gear on "neutral" so as to be able to immediately move when needed.
Make sure your Tires are properly inflated
One of the causes of more fuel consumption are tires inflated less than what it should be. I have noted for some time that my fuel consumption is more than what it should be. I also felt the drag on my vehicle is somewhat heavier.
When I stop by at my favorite gas station, I checked my tire pressure. One of my back tires where inflated on at 17 PSI instead of 30 PSI and the other one at 32 PSI. The imbalance have caused a great drag on my vehicles engine and caused less fuel efficiency.
So make sure your tires PSI are always correct in order to attain fuel economy.
Avoid driving like a race car driver
Driving above 80 kph results to more fuel consumption on a per kilometer or mileage. The engine needs more fuel for each increment in kilometers per hour at higher than 80 kph. Thus, if its not necessary for you to drive so fast, maintain a speed of about 70 - 80 kph. There is no need to hurry when you are still early for work. Driving at 80 kph is also much safer than driving at higher speeds plus you save on fuel. After all, you are not in a race and you are not a race car driver.
Load only necessary items inside your vehicle
It is common for some drivers to load a lot of things inside their vehicles as if it is their house. The heavier the load of your vehicle, the more fuel is consumed. So if you do not need to put your camping equipment inside your car since you are not going camping, why not put them inside the house.
Only bring with you the necessary equipment like Early Warning Device (EWD) for emergency road situations, spare tire, air pump and other tools you will need for your car in cases of emergency. You will be surprised how much fuel is saved by unloading your car of stuff whose rightful place is inside your home.
